THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Co-Chairs (culcchair@gmail.com)
Ryan Bogle, Girton College

Hello! I'm Ryan, a 2nd year HSPS student at Girton College. I specialise in Sociology and also do a bit of Criminology. I live in the GLORIOUS city of Brighton & Hove normally (the outskirts of, much like Girton - keeping the theme) and have been a Labour member since December 2017! I previously served as CULC's Class Officer and want to use my time as co-chair to reach out to these communities the Labour Party has failed recently, be that through my own lived experiences as a working-class person, or through solidarity and events with the Jewish community, members of colour or the trans community.
Eliza Castell, Homerton College

I'm Eliza,  A 2nd Year Crim and Soc student at Homerton. I usually reside in sunny North Kent where I've been involved in the Labour Party since I was 15. I'm passionate about ensuring the Labour Party remains committed to protecting the rights and continue to fight for those who face oppression. I have served as Women's officer, CLP Liaison officer for CULC and I also ran for councillor back at home (but can we not talk about that please x). I'm so excited to work with Ryan this term on trying to rebuild relationships with those who have been let down by the Labour movement including our trans, Jewish and BME comrades.

Publicity Officer (culcpublicity@gmail.com)
James Culhane, St John's College

Hi I'm James, a first year ASNaC in John's, and I'm our Publicity Officer for Easter term. I've been involved in CULC since I first came here, and it has always been welcoming and interesting, and I want to try and keep it that way and make sure everyone feels as welcome as possible. I'm looking forward to spreading the good word of our activities for the next term and beyond.

Secretary (culcsecretary@gmail.com)
Jed Asemota, Churchill College

Hi! I'm Jed (he/him), a second year HisPol student at Churchill College. I was the CULC BAME Officer last term and am excited to be the CULC Secretary for Michaelmas 2020. Coronavirus has laid bare the stark class divisions that exist in this country and I am proud to be part of a CULC exec team with social justice at the heart of its activism. I am looking forward to helping to organise the exec committee for a super-productive and fun term ahead!

Treasurer & Membership Officer (ci242@cam.ac.uk)
Charlie Innes, Downing College

I am very proud to be your new treasurer for the Cambridge University Labour Club. As a second year AMES (Japanese) student at Downing, I have had little contact with the club previously. I have been able to join in my local CLP in Thurrock and I hope to get to know Cambridge over the next three years. For the university Labour club, I would hope to ensure inclusivity both of people and views so that we can have robust and useful discussion as to our support for the Labour party. I think there is still a lot of headroom when it comes to broadening access both to Cambridge and to CULC and in anticipation of out virtual term, I am sure we will see very different approaches to digital inclusivity. Feel free to drop me an email!

Class & Union Officer (nc560@cam.ac.uk)
Nathan Creighton

.

I’m Nathan, and I’m really excited to be the class officer for Michaelmas 2020. The working class built Cambridge University, and perform many unnoticed jobs around all colleges without which the university couldn’t run. I’ll be helping to welcome students from underprivileged backgrounds to Cambridge, as I know from experience what a large culture shock Cambridge can be, especially in the light of the unfair A-Levels fiasco.

Socials Officer (grht2@cam.ac.uk)
Gregory Taylor, Homerton College

Hello! I’m Gregory, and I am your Socials Officer, a position title that sounds slightly too militaristic for what effectively means that I vaguely delegate when we all grab a pint and whine about tories. With a large conservative majority and a global pandemic, it’s never been easier to sack in radical politics and fall into despair, but I will endeavour in my new role to make sure CULC remains as politically dynamic, inclusive and tight knit in the time of Covid-19 as it was when I first joined at the start of Michaelmas. When I’m not engaging in CULC shenanigans I can usually be found in the Cindies’ smoking area loudly explaining why Cambridge should secede from the UK, trying and failing to learn lines for some play (I’ve recently convinced myself I can act despite numerous eyewitness accounts on the contrary) or, more likely, lying in bed, motionless, staring at the ceiling for hours on end in quarantine. If we are allowed out in public again, don’t hesitate to come over and say hi if you spot me! And if isolation does persist indefinitely (god forbid), please feel free to pop up with any questions or comments CULC socials related or otherwise!

CLP Liaison Officer (eb712@cam.ac.uk)
Emily Baker- Thurston, Fitzwilliam College

I’m Emily and I’m a 4th year at Fitz studying management and I will be your CLP liaison officer this term. I’m really excited to be involved with CULC this year and supporting the CLP as best I can. Please get in contact if you think I can help in any way and really looking forward to working with you all!

Speakers Officer (djh248@cam.ac.uk)
David Hoey, Girton College

David Hoey – Girton, I’m David, a second year PhD student in Plant Sciences. I’m originally from Glasgow, and first became politically engaged around the time of the 2014 Scottish Independence referendum. I joined Labour after the 2017 general election, because it was the first political campaign to give me any hope for change since the independence referendum. Unfortunately, we lost the 2019 election nationally, but we should not give up on our socialist principles in the face of defeat. The coronavirus crisis is one that upends our entire political system, and we must stand ready to meet the challenges that face us in the coming years. The structural problems laid bare by the coronavirus crisis are problems that can only be resolved by Socialism. Although this term is likely to be quite different from previous terms, I hope to be able to book some exciting virtual speakers.

Women's Officer (eh630@cam.ac.uk)
Ewa Hercyk, Murray Edwards College

Hey! I’m Ewa, a secondyear studying HSPS at Murray Edwards. As Women’s Officer I want to make CULC as inclusive as possible, welcoming women from all backgrounds. I particularly want to bring attention to working class women in Cambridge, a group that can often be overlooked at our university. I think that CULC can be incredibly influential in advancing the role of women and am really excited to see what this term has in store!

BAME Officer (dpb43@cam.ac.uk)
Dan Bui, Girton College

Hi, I'm Dan, CULC's new BAME officer and I'm studying German, Italian and Portuguese at Girton. I grew up in Kent split between my British and Vietnamese roots, an experience which makes me stand up to stereotyping of PoC, call out racism in Cambridge, and make sure BAME voices and experiences are appreciated and valued in Labour.

Picture
Graduate Officer (smp63@cam.ac.uk)
Stella Pryce

Hi, I'm Stella, a PhD student at the Faculty of Education and originally from Wales. As Graduate Officer, I hope to encourage more diverse participation of graduate students within CULC, in addition to representing the interests of the grad community on the committee. I am looking forward to working with the rest of the committee, to assure CULC is as inclusive as possible. In my spare time, I'll be in a theatre or hidden in a book. If you are a grad student who wants to get involved with CULC - please get in touch!

Disabilities & Welfare Officer (gr419@cam.ac.uk)
George Richmond, Fitzwilliam College

Hi, I'm George, a third year Historian at Fitzwilliam College. As CULC's Disabilities and Welfare Officer this term I want to both continue to ensure especially in light of covid-19 that our events are accessible, allowing people who may not want or able to attend physically to still access them. I also want to look at expanding education and understanding amongst the club of underrepresented minorities' rights, particularly those of Gypsy and Traveller communities. In my free time I enjoy writing about food policy, presenting on radio and having long chats in Fitz café.

LGBT+ Officer (hlm67@cam.ac.uk)
Hannah Millward, Homerton College

Hi, I’m Hannah and I’m a first year at Homerton studying English. I’m excited to be your LGBT+ officer for Michaelmas this year! I hope to hold semi regular socials (aka socially distant pints at spoons) and arrange some exciting speakers to come in and talk to us all. I hope also to become a point of call for anyone who needs me and to be a friendly face when we can’t all go to glitterbomb I also intend to help petition / campaign for any lgbt related causes around Cambridge and beyond to ensure the Uni continues to be and becomes a more welcoming space.

Campaigns Officer (jpp48@cam.ac.uk)
Joseph Paskiewicz- St. John's College
Hi, I’m Joseph, a second year English student at John’s. The year ahead will undoubtedly be difficult, but I’m excited to ensure that CULC continues to build momentum and be a force for political change in Cambridge. Our normal methods of campaigning will have to adapt, but I’m positive that CULC will rise to the challenge. COVID has unfortunately side-lined so many crucial issues this year and it’s vital that CULC brings them back to the forefront. Feel free to message me about anything regarding campaigns or campaigning!
